Episode 18: Costume Design for Controlled Visibility

This episode presents costume preparation as a method of controlling visibility. Non-reflective, consistent black clothing allows performers or selected body parts to disappear, while fluorescent fragments direct the audience's attention towards a specific role or action. Costumes must be comfortable, suitable for movement and tested under the actual lamps. Shoes, socks, logos, jewellery, watches, uncovered skin and reflective fabrics can unexpectedly become visible and break the illusion. Beginners are advised to start with one glowing hand, shoulder line, mask fragment or body shape instead of a complete costume. Effective costume design depends as much on removing distractions as on adding visible elements.
