Episode 17: Working with Fluorescent Materials

This episode explains how to select, test and organise fluorescent materials for black light theatre. Materials should always be assessed under the actual UV lamps, since colours and surfaces that look bright in normal light may react weakly, while unremarkable items may glow strongly. Beginners can work effectively with fluorescent tape, matte fabric, ropes, white or black gloves, card shapes, balloons and lightweight props. The key criteria are contrast, readability, movement and relevance to the scene. Shiny, reflective or overly detailed objects and too many colours should be avoided. Materials should also be sorted and positioned consistently backstage, because delays or confusion can quickly disrupt the rhythm and meaning of a scene.
