Balloon puppets Part 1

In this tutorial, we would like to present a simple balloon puppet exercise used in black light theatre practice. The activity shows how a balloon can be animated to appear as if it is floating and moving independently on stage. By carefully manipulating the balloon, performers create the illusion of a small character that reacts to movement and space, while the puppeteer remains hidden from the audience.

This exercise introduces participants to the basic principles of black light theatre, such as working with darkness, directing the audience’s focus, and giving life to simple objects through movement. Within the Out the Shadow methodology, exercises like this encourage creativity, experimentation, and non-verbal storytelling, helping participants explore how visual effects and object manipulation can be used to communicate ideas and emotions on stage.
